Peer Project for Youth (ages 13-24)

Peer Project for Youth is a program that offers LGBTTQA* youth a safe, fun place to learn new skills, create projects and celebrate our identities! PPY seeks to build the capacity of LGBTTQA* youth to support and encourage their peers to learn more about sexual orientation, gender identity and anti-homophobic education. PPY focuses on providing LGBTTQ* youth with the opportunity to be positively supported and affirmed as LGBTTQA* individuals; to create social change while learning valuable skills; and to increase self-esteem and self-confidence while increasing social networks, contacts and support communities for youth.
On Monday night PPY offers workshops and events that are decided upon by YOUth! If there is a workshop you would like to see take place, a skill you want to learn or a discussion you think we should have, give us a call or send us off an email! Monday night workshops include a focus on leadership capacity building, developing new skills, engaging in facilitated discussions, creative expression and community building. At each program we offer free tasty snacks and free bus tickets in case you need a way home.
PPY meets every week. Our events are updated monthly on our website, through our Facebook group, and our list-serve. If you would like to be added to our email list please contact sarah.k at: peerproject4youth@rainbowresourcecentre.org
Please call us ahead of time (284-2799) to confirm times and locations.

Past and current projects include, making of the film “Your Guide to the World Outside”, queer-leading, a poster project, a Human Rights Campaign and even a Show Choir group!

    FAQ

    Why does PPY exist?

People of all ages need a community where they feel validated, safe and cared for, where they can access resources and information, meet friends and attend fun social activities. For LGBTT* youth it can often be hard to find these communities, so we have enabled a space where LGBTT* and allied youth can fulfill these need.

    Who comes to PPY?

That’s a hard question to answer as youth of all backgrounds and schools attend. Regardless of sex, gender, race, religion, ability, nationality, appearance or sexual orientation, LGBTT* and allied youth can and do attend. Youth who come to PPY and Y and P are at different stages in processing and discovering their identities and have different needs. There is one similarity that we can all connect to though: we either are or know someone who is queer. At the RRC, we want to make sure that everyone’s needs are met, that everyone feels safe and that your voice is heard, which is why we continually ask you wonderful young people: what do you want to see? What do you need?

Please let us know your concerns, what you’d like to see happen and what we can do to make the Rainbow Resource Centre more inclusive of your generation!

    Library

The Rainbow Resource Centre has recently ordered a big stack of youth fiction and non-fiction so check it out as they come floating in, there are some pretty rad stories.

Our Safer Space is one where:

    • Outing people is uncool.
    • We think it is awesome that we all have things to say, but it is EVEN MORE awesome when we can hear each other’s ideas
    • We respect the Rainbow Resource Centre facility, volunteers and staff.
    • If we use a cup we wash our cup
    • We ask permission to photograph, post or tag pictures of people.
    • We make sure we all have safe transportation home – walk in groups to bus stops and vehicles.
    • We clarify and respect pronoun and name choice
        • He/him
        • She/her
        • They/them
    • We challenge each other respectfully. We try to address the comment or issue, and not make personal attacks or confrontations.
    • What we discuss here stays here.
    • We identify, clarify and respect  comfort zones – what might not be a swear word, or offensive to one person, could be to another. If we’re not sure, we can simply ask “do people mind if I use the word _____” and simply keep ourselves in check.
    • We respect people’s personal space (everyone’s bubble is a different size)
    • We do not tolerate homophobia, transphobia, sexism, able-ism, racism or fat-phobia.

    * Developed by PPY Youth, January 2009
Safe space is a process. We all have to live up to the set expectations in order for it to be safe for everyone. We ask all folks who attends PPY and Y and P live up to the ideal safe space that was set by the youth. If you have something to add that would make the space safer for you, we’d love to hear it!
